Middle Island was a quarantine station for immigrants in the mid nineteenth century. The number buried on the Island
is unknown. In 1847, the Looshtauk arrived with approximately 316 Irish immigrants. Ninety-six perished on the
island. A Celtic cross stands on the Island in honour of Irish immigrants buried there. Other monuments include
a Cairn, marking the Island as an Irish Burial Ground and a plaque recognizing it as a Provincial Historic Site. Middle
Island today has walking trails, picnic sites, a canteen, and Interpretative Center.
